There are so many things that you can do to make your Pinterest account stand out from the crowd, and most of them are so easy you can do it today!

How to Get a Header on Pinterest

The first thing you need to know is that you can only get a header on Pinterest if you have a business account. Your header, also known as your “cover” or “banner” on Pinterest is one of the first things viewers see when they head to your homepage.

This part of your Pinterest account needs to be eye-catching! It is easily one of the most important pieces to your account and should be treated as such. You want your header on Pinterest to consist of the following traits:

  • Be visually appealing
  • Relate to your Pinterest page topic
  • Contain the title of your business (not required, but beneficial)
  • Be simple but eye-catching

The easiest way to get a header on Pinterest is by following the step-by-step guide below! The process is simple and well worth your time if you want to bring in more traffic and distinguish yourself from the competition.

  • Log in to your Pinterest business account and click on your profile picture.
  • Click the pencil icon in the bottom right-hand corner of your Pinterest cover (if you do not yet have a Pinterest cover, it will likely display as white or grey).
  • Upload the image you want as your Pinterest header from your device.
  • Crop the image to the 16:9 ratio that is required for the header space.
  • Click save!

How to Make a Banner on Pinterest

Now, let’s say you got to step 3 in the above list and realized you don’t yet have an image you want to set as your header/banner on Pinterest.

Well, you have to make one! If you do not know how to make a banner on Pinterest, don’t fret, it’s easier than you think! However, you need to keep in mind the following pieces of information before we get into the fun part:

  • The aspect ratio for the banner is 16:9 (800px wide by 450px tall minimum)
  • Your banner needs to be simple but visually appealing
  • It’s recommended to include your business name in the banner

Now for the fun part, making your banner for Pinterest! There are several ways you can create a banner for Pinterest. The choice comes down to your personal abilities.

  • Design a header from scratch in a graphic design platform
  • Use a pre-made template with free decals from platforms like Canva
  • Find a stock photo you like that represents your business on websites like Unsplash (then just add a title to the front of it in a basic photo editing app)
  • Choose one of your own photos that showcases your business and again, add a title!

The first two options on this list may involve the most work, but they are also the easiest options for creating the correct ratio.

If you’re choosing to work with a photograph, you may have to accept that the entire photo may not be within ratio bounds and will be cut out of the banner.

How to Get a Background on Pinterest

Backgrounds are similar to banners and headers, except these can apply to individual Pinterest boards vs your Pinterest account header/banner. Adding a background on Pinterest boards helps those boards stand out.

Backgrounds also help tell your viewers what the specific board they’re about to open contains. They’re great for organizing and customizing your Pinterest business account!

  • Open up your Pinterest account
  • Click your profile account tab in the upper right-hand corner
  • Choose “your boards” from the drop-down menu
  • Put your cursor over the board you want to edit (don’t click it!)
  • A button will pop up that says, “change cover image” (this you can click!)
  • Scroll through the pins in your board and click the image you want to set as your cover!

If you have created a background specifically for your Pinterest board, you will need to upload it into the board as a pin before you can make it your cover image. Customizing your Pinterest business account is how you distinguish yourself within the never-ending sea of pins!

You must find ways to make your account pop and the best way to do that is by creating banners and backgrounds that represent your content. Getting a header on Pinterest is such a simple process, as is making a banner.

These two things won’t take you more than an hour but will likely result in an increase in traffic and a more attractive Pinterest home page!
